What Is Gender Selection?

Gender selection — also called family balancing — lets you choose whether your next child is a boy or a girl. During IVF, your embryos are tested with Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) before transfer, and only an embryo of your chosen sex is placed in the womb. The selection itself is 100% accurate: the embryo transferred is the sex you chose.

Why Couples Choose It?

  • Balance your family — add a son or a daughter with certainty, not chance.
  • Avoid sex-linked genetic disease — prevent passing on conditions tied to one sex.
  • Plan with confidence — and freeze healthy remaining embryos for the future.
  • Done ethically and legally — family balancing through IVF-PGT is a regulated, legal medical procedure in Egypt.

How is Gender Selection done?

  • The woman is thoroughly investigated for reasons that decrease success rate or stop us from doing the operation and treated if any is found.
  • An ovarian stimulation protocol is custom tailored and explained to you and started in the appropriate timing.
  • Your follicle number and size and uterine lining is monitored by ultrasound and hormone testing on certain days.
  • When follicles and uterine lining reach adequate size another medicine is added to induce ovulation.
  • You will be told to come to the hospital for egg pick up fasting from 6-9 hours and will be asked to bring an ID with you.
  • Your eggs will be aspirated using a special needle installed on the vaginal ultrasound under sedation.
  • The man’s sperm will be collected at the same time.
  • The eggs are then fertilized with the male sperm and left in a special incubator which has the same atmosphere as the inside of a uterus and they are checked at a specific timetable to monitor the division of the cells.
  • At a specific time the shell around the developing embryo is opened by laser machines and a professional specialist takes out a cell without harming the rest of the embryo.
  • This cell is then studied for its genetic characteristics which involves knowing the sex of the embryo.
  • At a specific time chosen embryos are replaced inside the uterus using special catheters and under supervision of ultrasound while remaining embryos are cryopreserved or disregarded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does gender selection work?

Gender selection (family balancing) is done with IVF and Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). The embryos grow in the lab to day 5 (blastocyst), a few cells are taken from each embryo and tested, and only an embryo of the sex you chose is transferred to the uterus.

Is gender selection legal in Egypt?

Yes. Gender selection for family balancing is legal in Egypt. Dr. Ashraf Sabry performs it under strict ethical and medical guidelines following international standards.

How accurate is gender selection with PGT?

PGT identifies the sex of each embryo with 100% accuracy. The embryo transferred is the sex you chose; whether pregnancy happens depends mainly on age and embryo quality.

Is it safe for the baby?

The biopsy takes a few cells from the outer layer of the embryo, which forms the placenta, not the baby. Current evidence has not shown an increased risk of birth defects in babies born after PGT.

How long does the process take?

About 21 days from the start of ovarian stimulation to embryo transfer, including egg retrieval, embryo culture and PGT results.

What happens to the remaining embryos?

Healthy embryos that are not transferred can be frozen (vitrified) and used later, for a sibling of either sex or if the first transfer does not result in pregnancy.

Do you use donor eggs or sperm?

No. Treatment uses the couple's own eggs and sperm only.
