Assisted Reproduction: When Is It Needed?

Assisted reproductive techniques prepare the sperm, the egg or both outside the body and help them meet, in order to increase the chance of pregnancy. They range from intrauterine insemination (IUI) to IVF and ICSI.

When is assisted reproduction recommended?

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
  • Severe pelvic adhesions.
  • Low sperm count or other significant sperm problems in the male partner.
  • Endometriosis.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that does not respond to simpler ovulation treatment.
  • Long-standing unexplained infertility, or infertility that has not responded to other treatment.
  • Women over 35, where there is less time for repeated trials of simpler treatment.
  • Couples who need genetic testing of embryos (PGT) or fertility preservation.
