The vagina is a muscular canal about 10 cm long, running from the vulva to the cervix. Cells, glands and beneficial bacteria in the vagina produce acidic secretions that keep it moist and protect it from harmful microbes. The vagina stretches during intercourse, and at ejaculation sperm are deposited at its upper end, close to the cervix.
Vaginal problems that can delay pregnancy include a blockage from a septum (a wall of tissue), severe narrowing that prevents penetration, vaginismus (involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles), and painful inflammation of the vaginal wall that makes intercourse difficult.

Treatment of vaginal problems
Vaginal infections
Infections are treated with the appropriate medication once the type of organism is identified.
Vaginal septum
A vaginal septum is removed surgically, usually as a simple procedure.

Vaginismus
Vaginismus is very treatable with a combination of education, pelvic floor physiotherapy, graded dilator therapy and, in selected cases, botulinum toxin injections. Until intercourse is possible, pregnancy can be achieved with insemination if needed. Learn more on our vaginismus treatment page.
